Kids Safety: Choosing the Best Loft Beds Furniture

Loft beds are actually very popular these days, especially among children. They are great to look at, especially if they are painted in bright colors; save a lot of space; have become more affordable; and possess plenty of designs to choose.

However, they can also be potentially dangerous. Hundreds of kids have already been rushed to emergency rooms after falling from several feet off the ground.

To prevent this scenario, it is important you can practice home safety. You can begin with the following:

1. Know when to use this type of bed. There is actually a more appropriate age for your child to start using a loft bed. It is best if you can give him one when he already knows how to climb the stairs and behave once he is already on top. Children who are below four to five years old are far better off sleeping in a much lower bed, preferably close to the parents.

2. Install the bed properly. One of the reasons why children meet accidents and injuries is because of the improper installation of the bed. The bed kit comes with directions, which you have to follow to a T. If you are uncomfortable installing the bed on your own, you can always request for an installation expert. The bed should not shake when someone climbs up.

3. Determine the maximum weight. Loft beds have their maximum weight capacity. Usually, it is 200 pounds. Though kiddos are generally small, they may fill the top bed with so many things, causing it to collapse.

4. Check the rails. Never purchase any bed that does not come with guard rails. Otherwise, your child is very prone to falling and suffering from injuries. The rail should not be too far from the mattress, and they should be at least three to five inches in height. The guard rail opening, on the other hand, should be less than three inches, preventing the head from getting caught in between the rails.

5. Do not place anything on the stairs or ladder. Remove clothing or any material blocking the stairs or the ladder. Get rid of coat hooks.

6. Teach your kids to be careful. You can do so much for the loft beds. If your kids would continue playing around, they are still keeping themselves close to danger. Inform them of the many dangers of horse-playing on loft beds. That will also make them responsible bed owners.

BedSaver, Inexpensive Insurance for any Fifth Wheel Owner

I would like to ask all of the fifth wheel owners out there a question. Did you ever, or have you ever seen somebody else, drop the fifth wheel onto the bed rails of the truck while hitching or unhitching? If you've been RVing for a while you have probably seen this happen, maybe even more than once. When you're at the campground look at the other trucks that are pulling fivers and you will likely see one with damaged bed rails.

Dropping the fifth wheel can happen quickly and easily. You're distracted at the campground and forget to lower the landing gear, or you're in a hurry, forget to chock the wheels and you pull the hitch latch, or maybe you think the hitch is locked and you pull forward, and BOOM! It can happen to anyone, even the most experienced fifth wheel owner. The next time you go to an RV dealership look at their service trucks, chances are one of them will have damaged bed rails too.

When this happens it can be extremely dangerous to anybody in the immediate area. It can also cause extensive damage to your tow vehicle and fifth wheel, not to mention how embarrassing it can be when other people are watching when it happens. Costs to repair damage to the tow vehicle and fifth wheel can range from ,000 to more than ,000, and hopefully nobody was injured when it happened. The thought of this happening is always in the back of your mind. This causes stress and interferes with enjoying your camping experience.

So how can you prevent this from happening to you? The BedSaver, by Blue Ox, is an inexpensive safety device that prevents the fifth wheel from dropping onto the bed rails of the tow vehicle. In the event of a hitch failure, or accident, the BedSaver will catch the fifth wheel pin before any damage occurs. I like to refer to the BedSaver as an inexpensive insurance policy, or better yet, piece of
mind for any fifth wheel owner. The BedSaver is available for most fifth wheel hitches and it's easy to install using regular household tools. Once it is installed it stays on the hitch and doesn't affect normal hitching or unhitching procedures.

Using a checklist for hitching and unhitching your fifth wheel can be extremely helpful too. I am including these checklists from my "Checklists for RVers" e-book. But, don't assume that just because you use a checklist you will never experience any fifth wheel hitching problems, or make any mistakes.

Hitching a 5th Wheel

* Set the hitch plate slightly lower than the coupler head so the trailer is lifted slightly as the hitch is mated. Do this by raising or lowering the jacks on the 5th wheel.

* Open the coupler lock so the king pin can engage the jaws on the hitch plate.

* Lower the tailgate and slowly back up. Have an assistant help you align the king pin with the coupler. Back up until the pin fully engages the coupler jaws. It may be necessary for the assistant to make minor adjustments to the height of the 5th wheel.

* Close the locking mechanism and the safety latch.

* Close the tailgate.

* Raise the 5th wheel jacks slightly off the ground (1 to 2 inches). Start the truck, put it in gear and slowly let off the brake pedal. This will help you check that it is properly hitched and locked.

* Now raise the 5th wheel jacks until there is plenty of clearance from the road.

* Connect the 12-volt trailer light cord to the receptacle on the tow vehicle.

* Connect the breakaway switch lanyard to a permanent fixture on the tow vehicle.

* Remove the wheel chocks.

* Check all lights for proper operation.

* Put on extended mirrors if applicable and hit the road.

Unhitching a 5th Wheel

* Chock the trailer wheels.

* Disconnect the trailer light cord and the breakaway switch lanyard.

* Place pieces of wood or other blocking material under the jacks and drop the landing gear. Put pins in landing gear and raise the trailer until all of the weight is off of the hitch plate.

* Open the coupler lock and safety latch.

* Lower the tailgate.

* Slowly pull the tow vehicle forward. It may be necessary to raise the trailer a bit more. You should be able to see daylight between the hitch plate and the king pin box.

Fifth wheel owners have a significant investment in their tow vehicle and fifth wheel. It only makes good sense to protect your investment with something as practical and inexpensive as the BedSaver. You don't want to be the fifth wheel owner who says, "That can only happen to the other guy!" The first time the fifth wheel pin drops and the BedSaver catches it, instead of the bed rails, it will be well worth the small investment. 'Tis the season for slips and falls! Icy sidewalks, snowy paths..... and inside the house?

Here is a check list of safety precautions for the older members of the family. If your frail elderly mother is moving in with you, or Grandad is coming to stay it is a good idea to go through the house and check for hazards and add a few safety features before they come.

Front path and steps

Make sure that the paths to the house are even, no major cracks, roots or rocks.Keep steps and paths clear of snow and ice.Check the stairs - no holes or uneven concrete.Hand rails, both sides if possible.Path and front entrance well lit. Movement-detector lights work well.
Entrance, Hallways and Stairs

Declutter - make sure that shoes are put away and outdoor clothes hung up. If there are children, teach them to put their toys away.Lighting - halls and stairs should be well lit. A night light in the hall between bedroom and bathroom is vital.Take up any loose mats that could be a tripping hazard.Check that stair rails are secure.
Bedrooms

No loose mats or rugsMake room around the bed, especially if your elderly Mom or Dad uses a walker.Have an easy to reach lamp by the bed. If it is awkward to reach the lamp, a sound activated ("clap-on - clap-off") lamp will help.A phone beside the bed.For folks stiff with arthritis or others who may feel light-headed when they first stand up, a bed assist handle is a great help in preventing falls.Again, keep the area around the bed as clutter-free as possible.
Bathroom

Where possible install wall bars at the end (tap end) of the bathtub and one on the far wall. A wall bar beside the toilet may also help.Some all in one piece, preformed tub surrounds should not have wall bars added. Clamp-on tub grips, or a floor-to-ceiling pole next to the tub can be used.Use non-slip mats in the tub or shower.A tub or shower stool is useful for those with poor balance.Any medications should be clearly marked. A dosette or blister pack will make it easy to keep track that the medications are taken as prescribed.
Living Room

Remove loose rugs and matsMake sure that there is room for a walker if one is used - coffee tables often have to be moved out of the way.Avoid rocking/swivelling chairsLoose electrical cords are a tripping hazard. Route them away from traffic areas where possible, or use duct tape to fix them to the floor.A portable telephone is safer than a fixed phone. Many falls occur when people are rushing to answer the phone. Keep the handset nearby at all times, putting it back in its charger beside the bed overnight.Have good lighting, easy to reach switches.
Kitchen

Make sure that essential utensils are easy to reachUse a sturdy step stool to reach higher cupboardsHave a smoke alarm and be sure to check the batteries regularlyIf your older person has fairly severe memory loss, it may be necessary to limit their cooking or even unplug the stove.See that any spills are quickly wiped up.

This may all seem quite overwhelming, but most homes need only a few adjustments. After all, some simple precautions could save a broken hip or worse.
